Early Literacy
Get your littles started on the right foot with our early literacy programs!
Experiencing words and letter sounds by hearing books read aloud, singing songs, and tying words to actions and movements helps prepare young children to learn to read by building their vocabulary and letter/word sound knowledge.
Storytime
Books and interactive stories and songs for our youngest patrons! Recommended for birth through preschool, but all ages welcome.
Fall 2025: Every other Wednesday morning at 10am at the library. ST alternates weeks with Music and Movement.
Fall 2025 ST dates are: 9/24, 10/8, 10/22, 11/5, 11/19, and 12/3
Music and Movement
Songs, active play, and finger rhymes for little learners! Recommended for birth through preschool, but all ages welcome.
Fall 2025: Every other Wednesday morning at 10am at the library. M&M alternates weeks with Storytime.
Fall 2025 M&M dates are: 10/1, 10/15, 10/29, 11/12, and 11/26.
Early Literacy Playtime
Get the kiddos out of the house this winter to meet new friends and enjoy literacy related activities and crafts! Recommended for preschool aged children, toddlers, and babies.
Activities include:
– Gross motor skill builders
– Fine motor skills and hand strengthening
– Letter sounds and recognition
– Dramatic Play
– Pre-writing skill builders
This activity is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged but not required. All programs take place at Miss Angie’s Place, located across from Kwik Trip in Pine Island.

Elementary Age
Choose Your Own Adventure Book Club
Join Van Horn Library’s Choose-Your-Own-Adventure book club! Over the course of the school year, we will read 9 choose-your-own-adventure books during this after-school program. Enjoy snacks as Ms. Heidi reads a book aloud each month and listeners vote on what paths the story should take; participants who read all 9 books will receive a prize pack – including a free book!
Recommended for ages 8-11
2025/26 School Year: 2nd* Tuesday of every month, 3:30-4:30pm
This year’s dates are: 9/9, 10/14, 11/18*, 12/9, 1/13, 2/10, 3/10, 4/14, and 5/12.
*November’s meeting will be on the 3rd Tuesday, due to the library being closed for Veteran’s Day on 11/11.
Teens
Teen Leadership Group
Van Horn Library is looking for teens aged 13-18 to help promote the library’s mission, collaborate on programming, and guide community outreach efforts. Email Heidi at hbreid@selco.info for more information.
